Summary

When a soldier with a troubled past and a struggling songwriter agree to a marriage of convenience for the military benefits, neither expects much after saying “I do。” Then tragedy strikes, and the line between what’s real and what’s pretend begins to blur in this smart and surprising romance perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes。

Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow couldn’t be more different。 Sharp-witted Cassie works nights at a bar in Austin, Texas to make ends meet while pursuing her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter。 Luke is an Army trainee, about to ship out for duty, who finds comfort in the unswerving discipline of service。 But a chance encounter at Cassie’s bar changes the course of both their lives

Cassie is drowning in medical bills after being diagnosed with diabetes。 When she runs into her old friend Frankie, now enlisted in the Army, she proposes a deal: she’ll marry him in exchange for better medical insurance and they can split the increased paycheck that comes with having a “family。” When Frankie declines, his attractive but frustratingly intense friend Luke volunteers to marry Cassie instead。 What she doesn’t know is that he has desperate reasons of his own to get married。 In this unforgettable love story, Cassie and Luke must set aside their differences to make it look like a real marriage。。。unless, somewhere along the way, it becomes one。。。

As a fellow diabetic (though Type 1), I must give this amazing book an honest review, since I haven't seen one from a POV similar to mine。I can't even begin to explain how much it meant to me seeing there was a Netflix movie about an ambitious, hopeful and creative girl in her twenties dealing with a chronic illness (just like mine) and all the problems that life brings upon her。 As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I had to check if there was a book。 And here it is, in all its glory!I don't thi As a fellow diabetic (though Type 1), I must give this amazing book an honest review, since I haven't seen one from a POV similar to mine。I can't even begin to explain how much it meant to me seeing there was a Netflix movie about an ambitious, hopeful and creative girl in her twenties dealing with a chronic illness (just like mine) and all the problems that life brings upon her。 As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I had to check if there was a book。 And here it is, in all its glory!I don't think there was a book I've read faster than this one。 I loved it。 I loved how raw and vulnerable and faulty and complex Cassie and Luke and all the rest were。 I loved their chemistry, I loved the storyline。 But most of all, I loved how much I related to both of the main characters。 Seeing my own struggles as a 22-year-old diabetic college student with a wheelchair-bound family member, and it being so accurately described, finally having an accurate representation。。。it was liberating。 Painful and very emotional– but so good。 Not gonna lie, I've cried about her more than myself。 It's real。 It's raw。 It hits too close to home。 But reading about her and Luke made me very hopeful about my own journey, about my own life and the future it holds。I know there are many of you who DNF-d this book and had very strong criticism about it (which is totally fine, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and taste), so I'd like to adress some things, as someone who relates to Cassie heavily: before you call her selfish, please consider that she isn't obliged to fulfill anyone's expectations but her own。 The struggle of living a normal life as a 20-something while being reminded about having to make constant effort to keep yourself alive is。。。 well, it's not easy, I'll tell you that。 Top it off with financial problems and everything else in her life– I don't blame her for making some of the mistakes out of fear, confusion, despair, etc。 Both her and Luke are deeply flawed and very troubled human beings, each with their own everyday battles。 I would just like to ask you to reconsider that and try to view their actions with a bit more understanding and compassion。As for the military propaganda, I wouldn't know what to say, except that I think the book handled it as good as it was possible, given the circumstances of the plot (although I do not support wars of any kind, or racism, xenophobia etc)。 When it comes to criticism on that topic, I don't think I have any right to defend the book, so I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable than me。But, as far as my knowledge and experience goes, what I can say is that the book is indeed flawed, but I am very grateful for such an accurate representation of battling life with chronic illness and dealing with different struggles in your twenties, since there is close to none so far。 Seeing Cassie and Luke find love and happiness amidst chaos truly helped me on my own journey with diabetes, and I'll be forever grateful for it。I truly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind who wants a heartfelt romance and a taste of life maybe beyond their comfort zone, as well as to my fellow diabetics。Representation truly matters 💜 。。。more

DNFED, this book I found it boring and slow placed。 However the movie was okay except for the racism

In my humble opinion as an avid reader *and* movie-watcher。。。the movie was better。 I feel like it took the bones of this book and built it up。 Reading the book itself after watching the movie is slightly biased, because it's sort of like fan fiction; I already like the characters and the romance, so now I'm just pinning faces and my own feelings to book mcs that, honestly, are far worse than I ever could have imagined。 The plot was undeveloped, the ending far too ambiguous, the romance very far- In my humble opinion as an avid reader *and* movie-watcher。。。the movie was better。 I feel like it took the bones of this book and built it up。 Reading the book itself after watching the movie is slightly biased, because it's sort of like fan fiction; I already like the characters and the romance, so now I'm just pinning faces and my own feelings to book mcs that, honestly, are far worse than I ever could have imagined。 The plot was undeveloped, the ending far too ambiguous, the romance very far-fetched because, unlike the movie (thank god), Cassie has a boyfriend throughout the story。 Like, an actual boyfriend who she's lying to and (fake) cheating on Luke with。 It's not really a strong basis for a relationship。 Especially because Cassie and Luke don't really have any great moments with each other throughout the story。All in all, I can't say I disliked it。 I got more of an insight into certain scenes and events, and the emotions of characters。 Reasons behind their actions (Luke's especially, although I only seem to find him unlikable after reading this)。 Cassie was (more than) sort of unbearable。Alas。 Book is bad(ish), but the movie is very good。 Highly recommend watching it instead of, you know, reading this。 。。。more

Watched the movie。 Panicked when i saw there was a book and read it in 2 days。

This book was gross。 The author should be ashamed。 Nothing says romance like 🥰racism🥰

Carrie Allen

This is one that I actually liked the movie better…

Emily

Preferred the movie over the book。 The book was poor and it really, really bothered me that for 95% of their marriage Cassie was dating another man。 So gross。 Fake marriage or not。

I didn’t even know that this was a book before the movie came out until the credits screen came up and I immediately knew I wanted to read it。 And I was NOT disappointed at all。 Just like the movie, I LOVED the book!

I decided to read this after watching the movie on Netflix。 Honestly both fell flat for me。 It just felt rushed in spots Cassie & Luke could of really connected and not fully put together。 It ended as it could of gotten better。

There's literally no ending。 They say they love eachother。。。 then she goes on tour (again。。。 what? How insanely selfish。) While he's facing charges of fraud。 That's it。 Just like see ya bye。 No epilogue。 No even closure to the story。It took me 3 days to read a book it'll normally read in a night。 And it's because it was honestly horrible。𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 2/5 ⭐⭐𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 2/5 🌶🌶 。。。more

easily one of my favorite books i’ve ever read。 it was cute, funny, romantic, and full of heart。 i loved the dual pov, the tropes (enemies to lovers, comfort, etc。) and i especially loved the main characters。 i thought that the book tackled the insight of a somewhat stereotypical marine and a minority feminist very well。 i enjoyed seeing the characters grow and learn to appreciate each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between。 i would definitely not hesitate to read this book aga easily one of my favorite books i’ve ever read。 it was cute, funny, romantic, and full of heart。 i loved the dual pov, the tropes (enemies to lovers, comfort, etc。) and i especially loved the main characters。 i thought that the book tackled the insight of a somewhat stereotypical marine and a minority feminist very well。 i enjoyed seeing the characters grow and learn to appreciate each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between。 i would definitely not hesitate to read this book again! <3 。。。more

- 1/5 stars -first book i’ve dnf’ed。 it’s a big fat no for me。 i watched the movie first because i wanted to see what everyone was talking about。 awful。 luke in the movie is a misogynistic, racist gun nut and his army friend, armando, who he claims he doesn’t tolerate (but does…) is the ultimate asshole。 i tried to read the book (stupidly thinking) it had some redeemable quality but there was no chemistry between the two even mid-way through the book。 just not my taste。 sorry not sorry。

This movie was just trying to push American military propaganda, showing how they 'fight for their countries from terrorist', as if they aren't the cause of the war。 The movie should have been marketed as a republican x liberal love story。 Luke was just a racist shit。 And when one of his military bros said 'kill the Arab's', like what????What I found hilarious was the scene in Iraq and how the military were acting so nice towards the locals, as if they don't kill them the 2nd they seem them。 This movie was just trying to push American military propaganda, showing how they 'fight for their countries from terrorist', as if they aren't the cause of the war。 The movie should have been marketed as a republican x liberal love story。 Luke was just a racist shit。 And when one of his military bros said 'kill the Arab's', like what????What I found hilarious was the scene in Iraq and how the military were acting so nice towards the locals, as if they don't kill them the 2nd they seem them。 。。。more

Let's be honest, the only reason I read this was because I needed more scenes of Cassie and Luke after watching the movie。And while I did indeed get more, it was a bit too much。 I'm glad the love triangle thing was not included in the film because it was completely unnecessary and annoying。 The book itself was mediocre, I didn't feel the chemistry as much between Cassie and Luke, but after watching the movie, I had already envisioned them in love haha。 Cassie also came across as a bit more selfi Let's be honest, the only reason I read this was because I needed more scenes of Cassie and Luke after watching the movie。And while I did indeed get more, it was a bit too much。 I'm glad the love triangle thing was not included in the film because it was completely unnecessary and annoying。 The book itself was mediocre, I didn't feel the chemistry as much between Cassie and Luke, but after watching the movie, I had already envisioned them in love haha。 Cassie also came across as a bit more selfish and inconsiderate via writing but not so much that it was annoying。 Also worth mentioning is that the ending was resolved better in the book - at least in my opinion。 。。。more

I had such high expectations for this book from watching the movie。 I absolutely adored the movie and I felt like where it lacked on parts where I knew the book would come through and I was wrong。 Because books are always better, right? I thought I would get all the hidden details and more elaborations but the movie is quite different from the book。 I honestly think if I didn’t watch the movie first I would’ve been bored。 It was definitely cute but I felt like I didn’t get everything I wanted。
